an article about conscientious objection
has anyone seen this article from the May 2005 issue of "Quaker Life" magazine? it basically gives a "how to" manual for trying to obtain C.O. status.
(the magazine is published by Friends United Meeting -- i want to state that i am not a member of their meeting and i do not agree with some of their viewpoints regarding other issues than C.O.)
the article is about conscientious objection. it gives the legal definition that the military or government uses to determine C.O. status. it puts alot of stress on how one must actually have a religious belief or demonstrate a set of ethical beliefs similar to a religious belief but without a divine being at the center. the government will not grant C.O. status unless a person can prove, in a hearing that they arrange, that they hold a true, permanent, deeply held, religious or ethical belief.

Another Tragic Addition to the Iraq Body Count:
I just received this message from a high school friend of mine, in San Jose, CA.:

"I don't know if you heard, but Adam Estep, Demara's husband, is dead. He died in Iraq; it's been in the newspapers for a few days.I was the Maid of Honor barely two months ago. He was a good friend of mine, I'd known him since eighth grade. Times like these make me question a lot of things.

If there is any way you could spread the word about the unjust killing of this beautiful individual I would be eternally grateful. Thank you and God bless."

Adam was 23 years old. His livejournal username: adeptus13. Please feel free to leave kind words for his loved ones.

This is what ABC 7 (God Bless corporate media) had to say about it.

Hi. I'm new. I'm Jig, I'm sixteen, I live in Baltimore and I realized I was a pacifist and a conscientious objector about two years ago, when we learned about them in school and I figured out that that was my philosophy exactly.

So hi.

I probably won't post much here, I'll just sit back and watch since you guys seem to have such interesting things to say.

Yeah, I'm going to go now.

But I think it's such a great thing that there is a community for COs.

Have A Nice Day,

Hi all

I'm new, and was actually wondering if anyone knows where i can find a comprehensive list of foreign casualties as a result of American/American-supported bombing.

I'm looking around as we speak but if anyone knows of a specific place to find such a list, that would be great. Thanks a lot :)

This is aimed only at those in the class of 2003. I'm sorry everyone else. I think your opinion is valid, but I'm trying to narrow the field down a little bit.

Regardless of your political views, I know you guys are avid writers (at least in your journals,) and I'm sure you all have a lot of thoughts on what it's like to be becoming an adult right now.

I had the idea to collect poems, essays, songs, stories, pictures, etc. to compile a book to be our collective statement about the times we're living in. I don't know if there is much interest in a thing like that, so I'm starting in LJ. If you would like to help leave a comment or email me at thistownwilleatyou@wouldilie.com.

Thanks in advance!!

New Community
I have recently created a community called changeyourworld. I really cant touch on everything i want out of this community. You can read the bio and the first post I made for more info, but this is a community that is dedicated to equality, cultural awareness, righting wrongs and standing up for your beliefs. The bio for this group leads me to believe that there are people in this community that would be interested in joining. I have high hopes for this community and if it sounds at all interesting to you, please check out changeyourworld for LOTS more info on what the group is and what it can become
Thank you,

And now a word from our elders
"I would not agree to participate in any form of warfare again. Wars have proved nothing, other than that everyone emerges from them as a loser in some way or another. "

"I've had a lot of time to think whether it was justified"[...]"We didn't know what we were getting into" [...]"I survived the trenches - and would never go back"

Today's News: The Figures Are In. The USA Wins.
Two items from today's news:

From CNN: "The death toll from the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center has been revised down to 3,050, the New York Office of Emergency Management said Saturday. "
Source(at bottom of page)

From CommonDreams: "More than 3,500 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan by U.S. bombs, according to a study to be released December 10 by Marc W. Herold, Professor of Economics, International Relations, and Women's Studies at the University of New Hampshire. "

So, apparently, we've killed more innocent civilians in a nation with less than 1% of the population of the USA than the terrorists killed on 11 September.

Do we get to declare victory now?

Will I be forgiven for not waving a flag and shouting "USA! USA!" to celebrate this news?

Racial Disunity... Within the same race!!!
Recently, I found out something that pissed me off. I didn't know that there was a verbal fight between the Indians and the Indian-Americans, at least here in Columbia. Some Indian-Americans call the Indians FOB (Fresh Of the Boat)... And some Indians reply to the the Indian-Americans by calling them ABCD (American Born Confused Dasies -Or however it is written-. By the way, Vivek, have you ever been called that way? It is PATHETIC, don't you think?).

It is not to say that there is not a similar fight between We Latin-born people, and the Hispanic-American community, but I have yet to be aware of that verbal fight.

People, listen. How can we reclaim equal rights to us all when we are even dividing our same race??? We want equality to all human beings, but we are looking for someone to degrade with a good excuse... It is ridiculous.

What are your comments about the "Fights between a foreign race and their American counterparts (No matter which race, just tell me which cases have you seen and your comments about it).

Discrimination from a teacher...
There was something that pissed me off a little yesterday morning. A fellow University of South Carolina student from Oman called Selma was insulted this morning by a teacher. The teacher in question said: "I am not sure about how to treat you, since you are a Middle Eastern". Why is that the terrorist attacs of 9/11 are now used as an excuse to insult people because of his race? And especially from a Teacher! Suppossedly, the Carolina code Discourages (and even condems) those kinds of things. I hate it when people behaves that way!!!!

She dropped the class and will address the issue for Student Government. I might do the same in the paper odf the college.

GREEN PARTY USA will hold press conference in CHICAGO
10 a.m.
at the J. Ira and Nicki Family Hostel
24 East Congress Parkway (at Wabash), 2nd floor

Armed government agents grabbed Nancy Oden, Green Party USA coordinating
committee member, Thursday at Bangor International Airport in Bangor Maine,
as she attempted to board an American Airlines flight to Chicago.

"An official told me that my name had been flagged in the computer," a
shaken Oden said. "I was targeted because the Green Party USA opposes the
bombing of innocent civilians in Afghanistan."

Oden, a long-time organic farmer and peace activist in northern Maine, was
ordered away from the plane. Military personnel with automatic weapons
surrounded Oden and instructed all airlines to deny her passage on ANY
flight. "I was told that the airport was closed to me until further notice
and that my ticket would not be refunded," Oden said.

Oden is scheduled to speak in Chicago Friday night on a panel concerning
pesticides as weapons of war. She had helped to coordinate the Green Party
USA's antiwar efforts these past few months, and was to report on these to
The Greens national committee. "Not only did they stop me at the airport
but some mysterious party had called the hotel and cancelled my
reservation," Oden said.

The Greens National Committee -- the governing body of the Green Party USA
-- is meeting in Chicago Nov. 2-4 to hammer out the details of national
campaigns against bio-chemical warfare, the spraying of toxic pesticides,
genetic engineering, and the Party's involvement in the burgeoning peace

"I am shocked that US military prevented one of our prominent Green Party
members from attending the meeting in Chicago," said Elizabeth Fattah, a
GPUSA representative from Pennsylvania who drove to Chicago. "I am outraged
at the way the Bill of Rights is being trampled upon."

Chicago Green activist Lionel Trepanier concluded, "The attack on the right
of association of an opposition political party is chilling. The harassment
of peace activists is reprehensible."

this made me angry. it's an MSNBC editorial that unflinchingly and irrationally equates pacifism with inaction and goes so far as to explicitly call pacifism "evil," trotting out george orwell's old quote about pacifism being inherently pro-fascist. of course, MSNBC does not take the time or bandwidth to actually give space to rational, articulate pacifist voices....

if you are such a voice, you might want to write them a letter.
